Avianca Holdings S.A. has made its first carbon neutral bond purchase, successfully offsetting fuel consumption emissions at our Colombia operations. These bonds are linked to high-impact social and environmental investments, the purchase of which has directly promoted six projects in Colombia’s vulnerable, post-conflict areas, as well as high-impact projects in other Latin American countries, including Peru and Mexico, and within the international community.
Avianca has also invested in reforestation and in renewable energy projects, such as biomass, solar and hydroelectric. This investment has resulted in a 743,509 ton reduction of carbon, which corresponds to Avianca’s total domestic flight emissions between January and August of 2017.
Projects in Colombia which have benefited from Avianca’s Carbon Bond program:
- Asorpar: restoration and reforestation of degraded areas in Cáceres and Cravo Norte, Colombia (post-conflict zones). This pioneering forestry project aims to generate productive processes based on the sustainable management of natural resources and the ecosystem, to rehabilitate soil degraded due to mining and cattle raising in Cáceres, within the Bajo Cauca Antioqueño municipality
- Procuenca: Forest Project for the Chinchiná River Basin. This project protects the Manizales watershed area, improves the region's fresh water supply, conserves soil and biodiversity, restores the moors, and promotes sustainable livelihoods for the communities in the region.
