Sustainability

Corporate Citizenship

The purpose defined for the airlines integrated under Avianca Holdings S.A., is to contribute to the social, environmental and economic value generation through the Corporate Citizenship strategy "Citizen Avianca". This strategy aims at developing Avianca´s Corporate Citizenship in Latin America through three pillars: Avianca Humana, Avianca Ambiental and Avianca Solidaria.

From a social perspective, Avianca signed the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative. This agreement is based on commitments with the United Nations International Human Rights Campaign (HRC), Global Decent Work and the International Labor Organization (ILO) agendas, as well as transparency and environmental protection standards. In addition to, Avianca´s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals the company also maintains a permanent dialogue with UNICEF with whom it has signed an agreement allowing our clients to invest in education projects for children and adolescents in Latin America. Pillars of Strategy

Avianca Humana

Since 2006, almost 3,000 children benefited from the redemption of nearly 70 million miles.
  • Niños Por América: On routes operated by Avianca, the company sponsors tickets fulfilling dreams of children with special needs as well as children from low-income families throughout Latin America. Since 2006, Avianca awarded more than 3,000 tickets.
Avianca Ambiental
We do generate environmental value through our management practices, alliances, certified products and initiatives. Avianca is committed to further reduce its environmental impact (figures from the 2016 management report)
  • 2,5% reduction in emissions per 100 passengers, per kilometer, compared to 2015. This result exceeds the goal of the commercial airline industry, which seeks to reduce its emissions by 1.5% on a yearly basis.
  • Appropriate management of hazardous waste (401 tons), 487 m3 of wastewater and 588 tons of conventional waste recycled, which represents an increase 0.7% when compared to recycling efforts in 2015.
  • Over the last 10 years, Avianca has recycled 3,000,000 kilograms of waste, avoiding this waste from reaching landfills, increasing materials useful life, including them in other production chains and supporting foundations, donating a large percentage of said materials.
  • With regards to water consumption, Avianca has worked in cleaner production practices to avoid wasteful water use its processes. Consequently, in 2016, only 215,806 m3 were consumed, a reduction of 20.92% when compared to the same period in in 2015 (El Salvador).

Carbon Trade Exchange

o2

Avianca Holdings S.A. has made its first carbon neutral bond purchase, successfully offsetting fuel consumption emissions at our Colombia operations. These bonds are linked to high-impact social and environmental investments, the purchase of which has directly promoted six projects in Colombia’s vulnerable, post-conflict areas, as well as high-impact projects in other Latin American countries, including Peru and Mexico, and within the international community.

Avianca has also invested in reforestation and in renewable energy projects, such as biomass, solar and hydroelectric. This investment has resulted in a 743,509 ton reduction of carbon, which corresponds to Avianca’s total domestic flight emissions between January and August of 2017.

Projects in Colombia which have benefited from Avianca’s Carbon Bond program:

  • Asorpar: restoration and reforestation of degraded areas in Cáceres and Cravo Norte, Colombia (post-conflict zones). This pioneering forestry project aims to generate productive processes based on the sustainable management of natural resources and the ecosystem, to rehabilitate soil degraded due to mining and cattle raising in Cáceres, within the Bajo Cauca Antioqueño municipality
  • Procuenca: Forest Project for the Chinchiná River Basin. This project protects the Manizales watershed area, improves the region's fresh water supply, conserves soil and biodiversity, restores the moors, and promotes sustainable livelihoods for the communities in the region.
